Women Fishing and Remembering Rose Hutton

October 7, 2022

Women Fishing.

It was on this day (October 7th) in 1922, Georgina Ballantine when fishing with her father on the Glendelvine Water following a two-hour struggle landed a 64lb Salmon, the largest recorded taken from a British river with rod and line.

Whilst reflecting on this, Frank Hutton reminds us of his mother's own achievement in 1979 as a Federation permit holder:

"My mother was Rose Hutton, the woman who caught the first salmon of the season on the Coquet, on 2nd February 1979.  It was her proudest moment when she presented the fish to the Duke of Northumberland. I have looked at the list of holders of the trophy and see she is the only woman to have achieved this"

What a brilliant moment for Rose and the examples both these achievements set for women of angling.

The Federation hopes this encourages more women to take up angling or purchase a Federation permit in 2023. If you are new to angling, we will be happy to give some free tuition.
