River Coquet - A gem of a river.
When the conditions are right the River Coquet takes some beating for it's fishing.
The recent water we've had has produced some excellent results from the Federation's waters and over the last weekend fish have been caught throughout the system.
The reported catches are too numerous to fully detail with several anglers enjoying some great sport but worthy of mention are Gordon Black who's had 9 fish including a sea trout of 7 lbs 5 oz, the heaviest verified so far, and a salmon of 10 lbs. David Lee has had 6 fish over the last two days which culminated with a lovely salmon of 12 lbs on Sunday afternoon. Also amongst the fish were Willie Toland and Mick Robinson on the Pauperhaugh beat with salmon in the 10-11 lbs range.
The highlight of the weekend, if not the season or even lifetime must go to Peter Robinson though. On Sunday alone, Peter landed 10 salmon mostly ranging from 7 to 10 lbs with his heaviest being about 14 lbs. He also managed to hook but lose another four. That is some achievement and some outstanding angling. Peter is an experienced angler and has fished many waters but as he stated "The Coquet is a gem when it's got water". Sincere congratulations go to Peter, and also his good friend Paul Robson who had a great weekend after catching his first salmon on the fly.
Also worthy of mention is angler Robert Bell. Robert caught a fish a couple of weeks ago that was upwards of 8 lbs in weight and after experienced adjudication the fish was deemed to be a brown trout. Unfortunately the fish's weight couldn't be verified as Robert's main priority was to release the fish as quickly as possible but from the evidence seen it is probably the heaviest brown trout caught on Federation waters in living memory.
Well done to all anglers that have been out this week whether you've caught or not. We sincerely hope you've enjoyed your time on the water.
Tight lines.
