STILL WAITING - BUT NOT THROUGH LACK OF EFFORT BY ANGLERS

April 3, 2023

THE FIRST SALMON STILL AWAITS

The River Coquet has seen sustained excellent angling conditions over the last couple of weeks however, whilst welcome Spring catches have been reported on private stretches upstream, we still await the first fresh fish on Federation waters which brings with it the honour of receiving the prestigious Coquet Trophy from the Duke of Northumberland.

On our lower beats at Warkworth, predominantly at the White Posts and the Stream Foot at the head of the tidal waters the regular good number of anglers have maintained their stellar effort in their quest for the first fresh fish but unfortunately we have only had near misses to date with 11 fresh fish hooked and lost. Whilst unfortunate that a fish has not yet been landed it signifies a healthy run of Spring fish which hopefully bodes well for the rest of the salmon season.

On the 22nd March we welcomed the beginning of the Brown Trout season and along with it a magnificent uptake of new permit holders. Already we have had some great catches well over 1 lbs. We hope both old and new permit holders have a great season in their quest for some of the finest wild trout our waters can produce.

Today brings the start of the Sea Trout season and hopefully we can look forward to another prolific run of these special fish with the Coquet holding some of the finest of the species the country has to offer.

We wish you all the best of luck on our waters over the coming weeks and that the salmon anglers can keep one on (please!) and bring that prized fish to the net.

Tight lines.
