RIVER TYNE - 2023 COARSE ANGLING REPORT.
2023 was a record breaking year for Tyne coarse angling & the Federation water fished exceptionally well. There are four annual matches, pegged from Hexham to Wylam, with the kind cooperation of various clubs & estate owners.
First match of the year, the Tyne Northern River Masters qualifier was held in July & was won with 40lb 8oz of dace from Corbridge. Top weight from Federation water was 17lb 12oz of dace from Ovingham.
Next the prestigious EA Tyne Championship in August, now in it's twentieth year, attracted 72 anglers from as far afield as Nottingham. Top weight & a new match record for the river was 103lb of dace & chub from Riding Mill. Top weight from Federation water was a fantastic net of dace weighing 40lb 2oz from Prudhoe. There were also many other good catches from Ovingham & Hagg Bank of 20lb plus.
The third match, the Gurkha, which was first held in 1977 was fished in September. This was won with 56lb 15oz of dace & chub from the Corbridge area. Top weight from Federation water was 31lb 9oz of dace from Hagg Bank. There was also 23lb 6oz of dace from Ovingham & 23lb 8oz of dace & chub from Prudhoe.
The final match was the Steve Roberts Memorial, held in November. This was won with 59lb of dace & chub from Riding Mill. Top weight on Federation water was 22lbs of dace from Prudhoe. There was also an 18lb 6oz catch from the Alders. The King of the Tyne, an aggregate of three of the annual Tyne matches, was a record breaking 158lb 15oz catch, almost 53lb per match!
As such the organisers of the Northern River Masters, of which we host a qualifier, have decided that the final of that competition be held on the Tyne next year. It is a two day event with 54 to 60 anglers taking part. The proposed dates would be Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th of November with a reserve date of 16th & 17th November depending on river/weather conditions. It will be a great accolade for the river to host such a prestigious event.
The Northumbrian Anglers Federation are proud to support these events and thank Steve Hoggins for his time in the arranging, preparing and reporting of the events.
