The Federation were very kindly invited by Tony Gray of the Environment Agency to a fish survey on Monday which took place in the south stream below Pauperhaugh Bridge on the River Coquet.
The survey produced excellent results with only one sweep of the stream and showed a very healthy juvenile population. Combined with other surveys carried out recently, the Coquet is on an upward trend regarding juveniles with today's figures being replicated in other locations.
The figures were : 176 salmon, 300 trout, 2 eels, 1 lamprey and approximately 100 stone loach and 50 minnows over a distance of about 70 metres.
Due to the high numbers and time constraints for counting further sweeps weren't required but Tony explained that he would confidently expect to reproduce similar figures had two further sweeps been carried out.
To summarise, the results show an extremely healthy juvenile population and long may it continue.
We'd like to thank Tony and his team for the opportunity to witness first hand the fine work that they do.
