The Long, Hot Summer
It's been a while since the last report mainly due to the very commendable reduced angling effort during the extremely hot weather and almost drought-like river conditions, however; over the recent weeks there has been a number of catches reported. We're now three quarters of the way through the salmon season and conditions have been really tough once again this year but we are now seeing a good number of fish in both the Coquet and the Tyne systems.
On the River Coquet, Paul Gilliard and Dale Green have both had a couple of salmon each all around the 8 lb mark. David Proctor has had a grilse and a 12 lb salmon whilst both Mitchell Fawcus and Colin Mitchell have each had a salmon in the 8 to 9 lb range on the spinner. The fly has also been productive in the low water with David Lee doing well with nine sea trout along with a 4 lb 8 oz grilse, whilst Leigh Final has had a sea trout and a nice brown trout.
On the River Tyne, despite the Kielder releases, catches had been few and far between with Billy Toland among a small few who've had a sea trout until recent days and a bit of fresh water reached our stretches. Paul Robson had 2 fresh salmon around 9 lb and Jacek Bernard landed two lovely salmon of 12 lb and 9 lb whilst Mariusz Baruch managed a sea trout, all caught on the fly.
A couple of reminders that anglers must notify me (Head Bailiff) before fishing our Bywell stretch on the River Tyne (see: Specific Rules) and any angler catching a fish that they believe worthy of weighing in, then please do so (see: Competitions) as it's of benefit to have a record of the heaviest fish whilst you may be rewarded for your catch.
Tight lines and all the best for the remainder of the season.
